Milwaukee County Cemetery Graves Are Sinking

More than 500 graves at Milwaukee County Grounds Cemetery 3 in Wauwatosa have sunk into depressions up to a foot deep and five feet long following severe flooding last August, according to Descendant Community of Milwaukee County Grounds Cemeteries. Judy Klimt Houston, the nonprofit's president, said wooden caskets in unvaulted burials have collapsed under 5 to 6 feet of river water and sewage, creating uneven terrain and safety hazards. Families and advocates are urging Milwaukee County to act before conditions worsen ahead of Memorial Day.

The damage stems from 2025 floods that submerged the site, exacerbated by berms installed by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District that turned the cemetery into a flood basin, Descendant Community reports. Milwaukee County Parks acknowledges the issue in a statement, emphasizing its legal duty to avoid disturbing unmarked graves due to uncertain locations and depths. The county is monitoring the site, consulting the State Historic Preservation Office, and backing non-invasive preservation efforts, but no ground work is underway.
